What is involved in registering a domain name?
. Domain name registration is a simple process where information of various contacts is
stored in the data base. Components of this data are sent to the central registry as well. All
domain name registrations begin with a name search of the domain name you would like to
register.
Should I pick a .com, a .net, or a .org domain name? And should I pick just one?
. You should pick a domain name which is more suitable as an identity for you. Whether it
is .com, .net, or .org, they all work equally well, but .com names are the most popular domains
used. It is not uncommon for businesses to register multiple names and variations of desired
names (brand names, trademarks, service marks, etc.), i.e. for a given domain name, you can
register all the three extensions - .com, .net, .org, subject to its availability.
What are the valid characters for a domain name and how long can a domain name be?
. A domain name can be up to 63 characters long (letters, numbers or a combination)
plus the 4 characters used to identify the domain extension (.com, .net, .org). The only symbol
character domain names can include is a hyphen (-) although the domain name cannot start or
end with a hyphen. Common symbols such as asterisks (*), under scores (_), and exclamation
points (!)are not allowed.
What are these other extensions such as .uk, .de, .nu, etc?
. The two character extensions are called country codes and are used for country code
designation. For example, .uk stands for United Kingdom, .ca for their Canadian domain
name. There are some 240 or so country codes for nations and territories around the world.

paid towards registration is also non-refundable. Therefore, you will have to pay the fees in

When will my DNS changes take effect?

please allow 5 - 7 business days for a DNS change request to complete. Typically it is faster
than this but as a rule, plan for this to allow a smooth transition.

Web Site (Some Website Related Issues)
Your website address is an advertisement in itself as it can be mentioned in all your
correspondence and documentation be it visiting cards, letterheads, brochures, etc.
Since a website is linked to your corporate image it should have an organized and well
presented look.
Do not commit the blunder of opting for a care of site (a couple of pages hosted on a domain
name owned by someone else e.g www.magnai.net/your name). You will save money no doubt,
but in the longrun it will cost your corporate image dearly and will be detrimental to your
business. Moreover it would be difficult to remember such a long and cumbersome address,
resulting in lower repeat visits.
A good website is one that downloads quickly and enables a person to view it in a short span
of time. It is therefore very important that a site has an equitable mix of text, photographs and
graphics. The download time will also be dependent on the local internet connection.
The information on the web site should be changed from time to time and this is done by
providing updates. It also helps in making your site a dynamic one.
Since we own and manage our servers and have not rented server space we are not
dependent on others. We are therefore in a position to ensure that your site is well maintained
and running on a continuous basis.
You constantly need to keep in touch with customers, suppliers, business associates and
potential clients. We provide POP-3 e-mail Id's for this purpose which would read as
name@domainname.com.
We provide you information and details of hits on your site. This is enabled by a hit counter on
your site and web usage statistics provided to you.
We also provide an enquiry form on the site. When the form is filled by an online visitor, the
relevant details are forwarded automatically to your e-mail account. The e-mail account is
password protected so that there is restricted access to the data in the e-mail account. The
again enables tracking of visitors on your site.
Apart from having existing and potential clients, new ones might be looking for your services.
To promote your web site we register it with all the major search engines (e.g Yahoo, Altavista)
about 200 in all. We also mention your website on other sites, known as cross linking. This
enables easy location of your site.
What is the World Wide Web?
. The worldwide Web (WWW) is a component of the internet consisting of privately owned
computers (Servers) on which information is displayed. The World Wide (Web) is the fastest
growing part of the Internet. One reason the Web is so popular is because it can display text,
graphics and audio on the computer.
. Web pages support hyper linking. As information is displayed on the screen, the viewer
can easily move from one topic to another by clicking on highlighted text and graphics and
jumping to the desired area.
What are links?
. In practice, a website is a collection of interconnected documents, all residing on the
server. Documents are linked to other documents on the site through Hypertext Links.
Hypertext is text with pointers (links) to other text. In fact, documents are often are linked to
other documents by completely different authors and even to documents on other websites.
Browsers let you deal with links in a transparent way -- select the pointer, and you are
presented with the text that is pointed to, a system of cross referencing where you can access
the referred document instantly!
What is a Browser?
. A browser is a software program that interprets the HTML code behind a web page and

. Data can be transferred over the internet from one location to another through a system
known as FTP (File Transfer Protocol). This system allows the transfer of files between two
computewrs connected via the Internet. The new generation browsers have the FTP facility
built into them of computer systems almost instantaneously. This allows customers to have
instant access to the information and also saveson printing and mailing costs.
What is a search engine?
. Search engines utilize indexing software agents often called robots or splders. These
agents are programmed to constantly "crawl" the web in search of new or updated pages

however, does speed up the process. Robots revisit your site periodically to refresh the
recorded information.
What is a Website?
. Basically a website is space on the hard disk of a computer (server) which is connected
to the internet. Information to be disseminated is stored here and anybody can access this
space and the information stored therein. Each website has a unique address called the
Uniform Resource Locator (URL) or its 'domain name' (e.g.www.india-bazar.com). Access to a

world in a series of "pages" connected by "links." When viewers see something that interests
them, say a catalog of a product line, they "click" their computer mouse on the "link," and
immediately they can access the on-line catalog. An organization might have several "pages,"
all linked to their "index page" or "home page." These pages typically include information
about the company and its history, products or services, technical support information, and an
order or feedback form.

downloads onto the viewer's computer. The practical consideration limiting the size of a page
is the amount of time it takes to download onto the viewer's computer. A page with too much
information takes that much longer to download.
. Thus, most pages on internet websites average out to between thirty and forty kilobytes.
What are Image Maps?
. Image maps are widely used in Web pages to graphically relate links. These might be
geographic maps, draqing of multi-component structures, organization charts, etc., with the
links leading to details about the selected sub-component of the image. Image maps provide
on overall view of a site and are usually located on the homepage. Each page or interest point
on the site is represented by a clickable hot spot on the map. An image map makes navigation
of the site easy and provide quick and easy access to all parts of the site.!
What are Frames? What are the advantages of Frames?
. Frames enable the spliting of a page into multiple panels, each of which can contain a
separate page. Clicking on a link displayed in one panel can cause one or more of the other
